Currently, I am making an R2D2 1:1 scale robot from Star Wars at Zahn Innovation Center. Its frame mainly comprised of 3D printed PLA plastic and its outer skin will be made from polystyrene. R2D2 will utilized two DC motors for its movement and a smaller DC motor for its dome rotation. Currently, we are powering it using a power supply for testing and troubleshooting purposes. The final design will utilize a 3S LiPo battery for power source. In addition, it has Alexa integrated using a Raspberry Pi 3B as a personal assistant.
To control R2D2, we utilized the HC-05 module for Bluetooth (BT) control via a smartphone and NRF24L01 for radio frequency (RF) control via a custom controller. RF will be used as the main method of control for R2D2 while BT serves as a backup method.
My responsibility is to lead a group of 3 engineering students in designing the electronic system. All codes were co-written and tested with other electrical engineering apprentices.
